Sci-fi short stories. The author is a physics prof whose current work and activist focus is climate change, and whose way of seeing the world reflects a deep and compassionate humanism. Clever, thoughtful, well-written. Many of the stories have a melancholy vibe – some quite directly linked to humanity’s actual bleak future as understood by someone who pays close attention to our current interlocked crises, some a bit more abstractly so. Some are even hopeful. Really, these are exactly the kinds of short stories that for a period when I was younger made me want to turn my writing attentions in fictional directions – the writing is lovely, the stories are original and smart and engaging, and in line with the sci-fi tradition at its best, they offer insights into our real-world selves and societies. Definitely recommended.
