Review: Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold

Good ol’ fashioned space opera. Told from the point of view of a former ship commander of a space exploration force now residing on the to-her alien planet where her new husband is a retired military officer and high-ranking nobleman’s son – she is pregnant and said husband has just been appointed regent for the young boy who has inherited this planet’s throne. Third book by internal chronology (though seventh by publication order) in a long saga of interrelated novels. Was given the second as a spontaneous gift by a friend a few years ago, which I read and enjoyed but never followed up on…until now. (The first is set 200 years before the rest, is apparently less directly related, and seems to be out of print.) Definitely a very particular mode of sci-fi, which is not as strongly to my taste as it might have been years ago, but which I enjoyed nonetheless in this book. Interesting world building, engaging storytelling, and an exciting ride. I will continue to gradually make my way through the other books set in this universe in the coming years.
