I don’t normally post reviews or do anything beyond silently note it on Goodreads when I re-read something, but for some reason a week ago I was seized with the impulse to re-read this specific Iain M. Banks novel set in his “Culture” universe — which I originally read somewhere between 10 and 20 years ago, and which has never before been among the small and peculiar collection of items I occasional re-read as “comfort books” — and I feel compelled to note a few things. 1) This is a very good book. 2) I remain sad that Banks isn’t around any more to write more Culture books for us. 3) There seems to be something about the structure of feeling occasioned by this pandemic that makes soothing and escapist re-reads particularly appealing at the moment. Or maybe that’s just me. Originally posted by Scott on Goodreads. |
