Review: Hammers on Bone by Cassandra Khaw

Novella. Noir detective story mixed with eldritch horror. The book opens with a young boy trying to hire a PI who is more than he seems to kill his (the boy’s) stepdad. A very quick read. The kind of punchy, compelling writing you would want from both of its source genres and that you would hope to find in something this short in order to give it the energy to work. Delivers what it promises, and makes me want to read more from this author. My only complaint is that the physical construction of the book is extremely shoddy, and pages kept coming out as I was reading – and this is not some fly-by-night publisher, but Tor!
