Review: Something to Talk About by Meryl Wilsner

An unfortunate photo that seems to show more than it actually does starts rumours about a Hollywood powerhouse and her assistant, leading to gossip, paparazzi…and maybe something more. Sweet, fluffy, heart-warming, and fun. Felt reasonably plausible in terms of the character journeys, which is not always true of this sort of book. One smaller plot concern: One of the earlier inevitable bumps in the road for this couple involved a failure to communicate about a relatively small thing that wasn’t totally implausible, but that felt like it was stretched beyond what the circumstances would bear in the service of creating a particular emotional impact. One larger plot concern: There is an episode that deals with the realities of powerful men in show business harassing and attempting to take sexual advantage of women over whom they have power. On the one hand, definitely an important question to deal with given the relationship at the centre of the book, and the book’s heart is in the right place in terms of how it approaches this particular bit of storyline. But it is just all resolved too simply, too neatly, too effectively to be plausible. Anyway, I’m sometimes a bit of a sucker for having my heart warmed, so notwithstanding those two issues, I enjoyed this book and cheered the protagonists along every step of the way.
