Goodreads Review — Open Earth

A sweet if somewhat insubstantial graphic novel. It is set on a space station orbiting a no-longer-habitable Earth. The first generation to grow up on the station have reached their early 20s, and under the mantra of “Honesty keeps us alive” in such confined and precarious circumstances they have developed a relational/sexual culture distinct from their parents that is very queer and ethically nonmonogamous. I liked the characters. The worldbuilding was pretty good. The feel of the book is one of happiness and plenty and possibility. And other than the fact of the apocalypse plus the near absence of opportunity for solitude on a space station, being part of the relationship network at the centre of the book sounds delightful to me. But unfortunately it felt a bit light on story – I wanted more, and particularly I wanted a more in-depth and sophisticated exploration of all of these relational parts in motion, but there just wasn’t enough book there to deliver. Perhaps a longer sequel?
