The excellent second book in an excellent sff trilogy. It had been a while since I read the first one, so it took a few chapters for me to get my head back into it, but once I did…great stuff. The world building continues to be sophisticated and gripping. I particularly appreciate that it is done in a way that didn’t just dump it all into book one, as sometimes happens, and there are clearly major elements that will continue to emerge in the final book. Won’t say much about the plot, but I suspect there is a great essay or three waiting to be written (probably not by me!) about Jemisin’s distinctive take on apocalypse, dystopia, and survival. Highly recommended.
