Goodreads Review: The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie

First fantasy novel by Ann Leckie, who made her name as an original voice in the sci-fi world with the excellent *Ancillary Justice* trilogy (of which I still haven’t read the final entry). As you might expect from Leckie, this is not typical fantasy. There are humans at a relatively early stage of state formation and gods that actively intervene in human affairs, but the worldbuilding is quite distinct and not beholden to the short-hand and tropes that dominate so much mediocre fantasy, and the storytelling is sophisticated and compelling. A mix of first-person and second-person narration that I would’ve raised my eyebrows at if you described it before I read it, but it works. Definitely worth reading.
