Review: The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw

Contemporary fiction. Short stories. All of them centre Black women, I think particularly Black women in or from the US South, in a range of relations with faith and family and love and friendship and desire. Short, readable, and engaging. Generally speaking, when I read short fiction, I prefer it to be either genre or weird, and this is neither, but I picked it up anyway because of the breadth of bookish content creators with disparate tastes whom I saw speak highly of it. And I’m glad I did. I particularly appreciated that all of the women and all of the stories felt distinct – even master short story writers can sometimes fall into writing the same story again and again, and there was no hint of that here. Really good.
