Goodreads Review – Temper by Nicky Drayden

Fantasy set in what the cover copy describes as “the southern tip of an African continent that could have been.” A society in which nearly everyone is a twin, life opportunities are determined by the division of the seven vices and seven virtues between each pair, and proximity with your twin is necessary for survival. Interesting and inventive worldbuilding, but the storytelling didn’t work for me through much of the book – a few spurts where it really hooked me, especially towards the end, but those were few and far between. Far too often, the next thing to happen to advance the plot just sort of happened, in a way that felt like it came out of the blue. The author is undoubtedly talented, and an earlier novel seems to have received quite a bit of acclaim, so I’m not going to rule out picking her work up again, but this one just didn’t do it for me.
