Review: A Pale Light in the Black by K.B. Wagers

Sci fi. Set far enough in the future that there has been a major climate crisis-related collapse on Earth and then a recovery, as well as expansion of humanity to points within the solar system and even to the stars beyond. It is a universe with no non-human sentient species, at least so far, and the story is set among a military service roughly equivalent to the coast guard that works within Earth’s solar system. A younger child from one of humanity’s most powerful families joins this service, against her parents’ wishes – along with owning the most important corporation in existence, many in the family also serve in the space equivalent of the navy, and scorn the coast guard. Hopeful, found family, lots of action, not military sf in a genre sense despite the setting. The story is about the relationships among and of this crew, a sort of high-stakes skills competition among branches of the military, and a mystery plotline. Quite enjoyed it.
